AN EVER-EVOLVING
MANIFESTO We are Ta-Nia: a theatre-making duo
committed to
challenging the limits of theatre
to create unapologetically Blk
spaces of liberation.

Through theatrical rituals*, we invite audience members to engage in a re-imagining of our current world so that they can replicate that practice beyond the physical and temporal boundaries of the theatrical space.*We understand ritual as circular, intentional, collective, and multi-dimensional. Together this creates a particular rhythm that disrupts the confines of linear narratives found in Western tradition. Through the process of ritual, we have the agency to create alternative modes of existence and realities. We believe that current institutions of theatre are removed from the art form’s origins as centers for community gathering, building, and imagining – rituals for radical healing and solidarity. Our commitment is to return to that ritual of theatre and challenge what it can be, all within established theatrical spaces as a process of decolonization.
As creators and collaborators, we focus on developing new work that foregrounds identity, collectivity, and celebrations of dreams and near-futures. We’re interested in not only what it looks like to create a piece that shamelessly centers Blk-ness, but also what it means to ask non-Blk individuals to engage with decentralizing themselves. We listen when bell hooks tells us, “The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is – it’s to imagine what is possible.” So while we create utopian environments, we still engage critically in the here and now by offering our Blk audience with tangible tactics for actualizing their Afro-future.
We thank and honor the ancestors, community leaders, and mentors who have guided us to this point. Because of their work, we stand on a solid foundation that we aim to only add to – whether that be continuing the work or finding new ways that lead us to the ultimate goal: the liberation of Blk people. We proudly consider ourselves theory-hoes in training and ground our work in theatrical and theoretical conversations of Blk-ness in an anti-Blk society.
One of our main sources of inspiration is the “Mundane Afrofuturist Manifesto” by Martine Syms which looks toward Blk humanity and community as the means of speculation in order to (re)imagine the future. How this translates to our artistic practice is that instead of using science fiction technology as the access point to imagination, we use the “now” space of theatre – what we have in this present moment to build our Afro-future(s).

We are also charged by the last line of the Mundane Afrofuturist Manifesto: “… to burn this manifesto as soon as it gets boring.” It keeps us accountable to the people who we wish to service, for if our rituals no longer respond to the needs of the community – or worse, work in antithesis to the needs of the community – for sure burn it down! We hope that the future ancestors rise from the ashes anew.

Ultimately, what we share with the world wants to reflect our process, one that is highly collaborative and challenges, encourages, and pushes others to confront the aspects of reality we want to change. For every project, we maintain the following values: (1) the belief in community, (2) the magic of theatre, (3) the power of bodies, (4) the importance of visibility and sharing, and (5) the beauty of multiplicity, ambiguity, potentiality, and complexity.

signed,
Ta-Nia*

[our tenets]

1. I commit to dreams made by Blk ppl taking priority and precedent in this space.

2. Matter cannot be created, nor destroyed. And that applies to abolition.

3. “‘Twoness’ is inherently contemporary, even futuristic. DuBois asks how it feels to be a problem. Ol’ Dirty Bastard says ‘If I got a problem, a problem’s got a problem ‘til it’s gone.’”

4. I commit to reimagining and experiencing the Future, Presently.

5. In this moment, I commit to loving Blk bodies, spaces, peoples, and minds – honestly and without conditions or incentives.

6. In this moment, I commit to centralizing the Blk experience, even if – especially if – that means decentering myself.

	donations are always appreciated
they can be sent to:

	venmo @hitaliania
	cashapp $hitaliania

we intentionally pay donations forward to:
1. mutual aid funds and grassroot collectives (some favorites are BTFA collective, For the Gworls, Bushwick Ayuda Mutua, and NourishNYC)
2. paying our collaborators larger fees
as we intentionally work with BIPOC and queer artists, it’s important that we recognize the way systemic capitalism affects our communities and strive towards equity by paying collaborators as much as we can and always being people-first3. providing free offerings to community
(examples include providing take-home snacks, seeds to be planted, and more alongside our projects)

“The joyful celebration Ta-Nia presents in Dreams in Blk Major is a journey through popcultural references and narrations whilst it reflects the unspoken, the taboo. The invisible. It dismantles what theatre basically is and was: a white institution and once a ritual. A ritual that helps to cross boundaries, break taboos, disrupt narrations and sometimes creates communities. Offering irritation, maybe frustration, but also empowerment as a first step towards change.” - Sarah Yawa Quarshie, Ensemble Member of Schauspiel Dortmund

I wanna make something that’s ours.

Like our own universe,

with our own stories, and dreams, and possibilities.

A world that isn’t contingent on a gatekeeper,

or a history bound by chains –

because there are no chains to begin with.

I want to create a future that’s expansive,

and filled with light

and makes us light.

A future for us to celebrate in all its glory.

© Ars Nova ANT Fest / Danny Bristoll“As a collectively written piece, “Dreams in Blk Major” celebrates collaboration, communal practice. Its intimate form of address, along with its political thrust, allows it to speak directly to each individual in the room, as well as to the collective in the audience and beyond. The text is grounded in reality, directly interacting with audiences, yet simultaneously evoking a poetic dream world. It lays bare struggles and hopes shared among the Afro-diasporic community in a transnational context, while offering reflections on individual dreams, and thus proposes politics that challenge concentrations of power. We find honesty not bound with reality and poetic thoughts that are still grounded with the audience as part of direct reality. Throughout, it speaks directly to the present moment with its unique set of urgencies while also attempting a dream of new futures.” - Laila Soliman, Playwright + Dramaturg + Director

THE MAP PROJECT

Living at the intersection of radical imagination, dreams (and rest), Mundane Afrofuturism, and pleasure, the map project is a virtual experiment in devising. It is a virtual dream space to heal and play. It is a virtual offering of community. It is a virtual tool of radical imagination.

Video from The Map Project installation, 2021

Available Summer to Winter 2020, The Map Project saw over 50 users with over 200 submissions.
The Map Project hopes to provide a space for individuals to unapologetically go down a rabbithole, send up their dreams and visions, and come back out to a wide net of community. As artists, we find it crucial for our projects to contain the DNA of our community and The Map Project is a way for us to do that.
As much as this experience is a digital devising project, it’s also an offering for you. This space is one of intention, reflection, pleasure, healing, restoration, and radical imagination—for YOU. We encourage you to move through this experience with an open mind. There will be prompts for you to engage with but this is not an assignment. It’s an invitation. Pick up what is of interest to you and move past what is not. Everything will be submitted to us (Ta-Nia) and we will be the only two people seeing what is submitted.*
*By participating in The Map Project, you agree that Ta-Nia exclusively owns all rights to your submissionsand can use them for the development of A MAP TO NOWHERE (things are) and any derivative works created. You waive the right to inspect or approve of the uses of any printed, electronic, or live copy.

“[The Map Project] is a digital tour through the capacity of your own imagination to envision utopia, guided by meditations, video art, and dozens of prompts written by Ta-Nia. It works by initiating participants into the wisdom tradition of their own sensory faculties and applying that wisdom to realize the Afro-future.” - Caitlyn Tella for The Quarterless Review

Surprise!! We’re throwing a birthday party for the future and we need your help getting ready — consider this your official invitation. Welcome to “Tactics For The Future” as part of Ta-Nia’s residency with HLTM.
To create a community and collective vision across borders, Ta-Nia built “Tactics For the Future,” a virtual manifestation and (re)imagination ritual. Every month on the website, Ta-Nia will guide you through monthly prompts, activities, and meditations — and by the end, the submissions collected on this site will materialize into a birthday party for the future at which we can all celebrate.

A MAP TO NOWHERE
(things are)

Inspired by the Mundane Afrofuturist Manifesto + Eve L. Ewing's Electric Arches
A MAP TO NOWHERE (things are) is an inter-disciplinary theatrical experience, chakra based ritual, and abolitionist practice that starts in the space between dreams and reality and works to close the gap between the two.
Developed as part of Soho Rep’s 2019-21 Writer/ Director LAB
